Questions

Frequently asked questions

The things couples ask me most. If yours isn’t here, just ask.

Booking and availability

Use the Check my date form, or call or email me. I reply within 24 hours. Please include your wedding date, your venue or the area, and roughly how many guests you expect.

As soon as you have a date and a venue. Once I’ve confirmed your date, I hold it for you.

To confirm How far ahead you take bookings, and the latest you’d accept one.

I’ll reply, answer your questions and arrange a time to meet. At our first meeting I walk you through the next steps and the paperwork, and we talk about the ceremony you imagine. About three months before the wedding we meet again to review your ceremony plan.

To confirm That this is how you usually work, and whether meetings are in person, by phone or on video.

Deposit details will go here.

To confirm Deposit amount, when the balance is due and how couples pay.

Yes. I’m based in Wandi and marry couples across Perth and surrounding areas.

To confirm Whether travel fees apply and from how far.

Legal requirements

It’s the form every couple completes to tell an authorised celebrant they intend to marry. I help you fill it in and I lodge it as your celebrant.

At least one month and no more than 18 months before your wedding. The one-month minimum is strict, so if I receive your notice on 2 April, the earliest you can marry is 2 May. You can complete the notice from overseas if you’re marrying in Australia.

Call me as soon as you can. A prescribed authority can approve a shorter notice period for reasons such as work or travel commitments, wedding arrangements already made, medical reasons, legal proceedings or an error in the notice. Approval isn’t guaranteed, so the earlier we talk the better.

  • Proof of your date and place of birth, such as a birth certificate or passport
  • Photo ID, such as a driver’s licence or passport
  • Proof that any previous marriage has ended
  • An official English translation of any document not in English

You don’t need all of these to sign the notice, but I must see them before the ceremony.

Yes, as long as you’re not currently married and you can show how your last marriage ended: divorce orders, a death certificate, or an annulment granted by the Family Court. A divorce becomes final one month after it’s granted, so check the date on your orders.

Yes, two people aged 18 or over. They don’t need to know you well. You, your partner, your two witnesses and I all sign the marriage certificates.

You must be 18. If one of you is 16 or 17, a court must approve the marriage first.

No. You don’t need to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident to marry in Australia. If you plan to live here afterwards, check the visa requirements as well.

Ceremonies and what’s included

Wedding ceremonies large and small, each one written for the two of you; tiny 15-minute ceremonies in my home garden; legal-only ceremonies; and immigration letters.

Yes. I’m a marriage celebrant, so a ceremony with me is a legal marriage in Australia. It is the same legal marriage as any other.

Of course. Many couples tell me the vows we wrote together were the part they loved most. I’ll help you find the words that matter to you, whether that’s a few heartfelt lines or something longer.

Yes. Some couples like to surprise each other on the day. Tell me early and I’ll plan the ceremony around that.

To confirm How you handle private vows.

Anywhere in Perth and surrounding areas that suits you. Recent ceremonies include Caversham House, Leighton Beach, Queens Gardens and Cottesloe Civic Centre.

To confirm Which venues you’re happy to name publicly.

A short, 15-minute ceremony in my garden for up to four guests, from $500. It’s a lovely way to marry with the legal side done properly and no fuss.

To confirm Whether to name Wandi as the location on the website, and what’s included (certificate, witnesses, photos).

Yes. A legal-only ceremony is the official wording with your two witnesses, for $450.

Yes. Every couple is welcome.

To confirm You’re happy with this wording.

Planning and the day

My tiny home-garden ceremonies take about 15 minutes. For a wedding ceremony we shape the length around you.

To confirm A typical length for a wedding ceremony.

Details will go here.

To confirm Whether you offer a rehearsal, whether it’s included, and how it works.

Yes. Bring the songs, readings and traditions that matter to you and I’ll weave them into the ceremony. I can also test and set up your music on the day.

To confirm Whether you supply a microphone and PA, and any music suppliers you recommend (for example Les Trois Amies or Dolce Ensembles).

It can be, with a little planning. Please arrange shade, umbrellas and water for your guests, and a shaded spot for me and any musicians. Hot sun is also hard on makeup and suits, so plan for it. If you’re worried about the weather, we’ll agree a back-up plan well before the day.

I dress to suit your wedding and I’m happy to match your colours. I come from a fashion background and have run my own businesses, so I like to look the part. Tell me your colours and I’ll plan my outfit.

After the ceremony

On the day I give you a ceremonial certificate of marriage to keep. Within 14 days I lodge your paperwork with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the state where you married. You can then order the official certificate from the registry, which I can request for you, usually for a fee. You’ll need the official one to change your name or prove you’re married.

To confirm Whether you order the official certificate for couples, and what that costs.

Once you have your official certificate, you update your name with each organisation: your bank, driver’s licence, passport, Medicare and so on. If you’ve booked your honeymoon before the wedding, check which name the bookings are under and travel on that name, which is usually your name before the wedding.

To confirm Whether you’d like to give couples a name-change checklist.

A letter from me confirming that your relationship and ceremony are genuine, for use with a visa application. They cost $100.

To confirm Exactly what the letter covers and who it suits, so couples know whether they need one.
